A Family Banquet

“A balance must be struck in one’s life before the mortal journey or after. To be truly tested, each soul will walk alone, with home just a wisp of a memory.”

The Book of Journeys—Abr., Author Unknown

Samy and I hobbled into the main yard late in the afternoon. We ignored the sylphs and went to the water pump to wash up before heading inside. The cool water on my aching head felt good. Samy was sorry. I didn’t fault him a bit for what he’d done. After the wash, we walked inside. I waved away offers of help. All I wanted was a nice rest in my fireside chair. Benny was already working the kindling. The kettle was on the stove and so I waited for the glorious high-pitched whistle when Emmet walked through the door.

“What a glum lot you all are,” he said, placing his walking staff next to the entrance. “I came to give you good news, not receive a sour reception.”

I pulled the wet towel from my forehead to expose the wound. Emmet gasped, and we all watched in silence as he crossed the room in a hurry. Dread filled my gut; there was no way our mischief was going to be kept secret after this.

“Huldah’s hurt,” Samy said, his analysis obvious and deflated.

“I see that.” Emmet knelt in front of me to inspect the damage. He touched the affected area with his gentle fingers and still I winced. “This is significant. Do you feel the healing stitching it back together?”

“Of course,” I said. “It’s just slower, with an uncomfortable pressure over my eye and a nasty headache.”

“Give it some time.” Emmet thumbed my cheek with a tender smile before pivoting around to face my housemates. “I’d like to know what caused this.”

“A heavy satchel,” Francine sniffed, “used to break her concentration during bond training.”

Emmet stood up and took a seat in the chair next to me as the teapot whistle blew. Samy rushed to the stove and returned a few moments later with a cup-laden tray. The silence bore down on him as he handed out the warm servings. Our eyes met, and I shook my head. He ignored my pleading and began a recitation of the day’s events from the time we left the house. At least he didn’t include our travels from the night before. Emmet listened, his face revealing very little.

“Do you have anything to add?” Emmet directed the question at Flora. It caught her off guard as she stammered, wings fluttering as he patiently waited. I itched to touch our bond but that would make our hiding something obvious. With no alternative, she spilled the entire description of our encounter within my mind’s eye, with special emphasis on what we had learned after our fall.

“Ah, Moonsingers.” Emmet nodded rather casually. “That would do it. Mischievous hedera and very rare, this one especially. It was created for you, Huldah. I gave it to you as a present for your Natal Day when you were young.
